One month old.

The pediatrician thinks that poor Matteo is a little colicky.  He has been crying so much this week that his sweet voice has gotten all hoarse and he sounds extra pathetic and helpless.  It seems like nothing works to make him feel better.  He looks so uncomfortable and it really tugs at my heartstrings.  We're trying several home remedies to help ease the pain in his tummy (different burping postures, swaying, swaddling, singing, back and tummy massage, gripe water, sitting up after nursing), but so far everything only seems to work temporarily or sporadically.  I hate to see my baby in pain--hopefully it will pass soon as he gets bigger and his system continues to mature.

In other {and happier} Matteo news this week:

He had his four week birthday...

...discovered the wonder of black and white patterns...

...got a colorful new play mat and activity gym...

...found another baby in the mirror...

...managed to free his hands and toes from every swaddle attempt...

...had 3 baths and pretty much disliked every one...

...and brought so much joy to his mamma and papa.

  1. Wesley had colic for awhile, and it stinks, and it is so hard. I hope it goes away soon, and your sweet lovely boy returns permanently. We found that dancing/bouncing/singing to music helped Wesley fight the grumpies. Your boy is just beautiful and wonderful. And he definitely has an eye (and cute face) for the camera!

    1. Thanks, Camille! I'm so glad to hear that Wesley is feeling better. I loved reading your "Mommy Musings" post and I remind myself of your words all the time. Yes, the dancing and singing combo seems to work well (as does the "Happiest Baby on the Block" trick of saying "Sshhh" in his ear) at least to get him to fall asleep. My arms go completely numb, but anything is better than that sad baby scream! How is everything else going? Is Wesley still eating constantly? I absolutely love his big expressive eyes--and I can see from the pictures that he's starting to really look at everything now. So exciting!

  2. Yeah, we called it the "dancing hour". I wish I'd tried having Orion sleep reclining rather than laying down completely. Don't know if it would have helped, or if anything does! I recommend the "miracle blanket" (Amazon, best $30 I've spent) for swaddling. Colic can aggravate post-partem depression, so be on the lookout. It takes such composure to get through the colicky stage, but you can both do it! It won't last forever even if it seems like forever right now! And boy do you have a cute darling baby!

    1. Thanks so much for all of your sweet--and helpful--comments, Eva! It really makes me feel better to hear about others' experiences with similar difficulties. Having seen how cute and happy Orion is, I have renewed hope for all the fun moments to come! In the meantime, I think I'm going to add the "miracle blanket" and the moby wrap to my Amazon cart, pronto. How is little Sylvia doing? She must be getting so big! The last time I snuggled her she was still teeny tiny. Love to you all.

  3. I love the sense of mutual fascination you captured in the photo of Una and Matteo! I'm sorry to hear about Matteo's colic and hope his poor little tummy feels better soon . . .
